Facebook Drama: What Would You Do?

How much is too much detail to share in Facebook?

Earlier tonight, one of Jason's high school friends posted the following for her status update:

I just found out that my husband (FULL NAME HERE) of 20 yrs. has been cheating on me with an (NAME HERE). Needless to say things are going to change for them REALLY SOON! I'll handle this through the courts & they'll be sorry. He left me (blonde, blue-eyed, beautiful, size 2) for (NAME HERE AGAIN)=short, FAT, ugly, home wrecker. Just saying!
Now, I don't know about you, but that sort of thing definitely catches my attention. (Or, in this case, Jason's attention, whereupon he shared with me.) I feel really, truly horrible for this woman. It's awful and I would imagine that she is in a whole lot of pain. I am curious, though, how often this sort of thing happens.

My friends' status updates are pretty mundane. There are a handful of people who post the "please give me attention" posts; you know, the ones that are worded in such a way that you are supposed to ask what is wrong. Vaguely annoying but we're all entitled to a little drama in our life. No harm, no foul, in my opinion. I find the political posts to be the most annoying and my friends do post a ton of those! I don't think I've seen anything like the one Jason found tonight though. I guess I have boring friends. (No offense, guys! I mean that in the best, nicest possible way.)

I know myself, and I do have a vindictive streak. (Very, very few people have ever seen it. It takes a massive hurt to get me to that point.) It's possible, I guess, that I could do something like that. I don't think I would, though. Not for Jason's sake, but for the sake of our mutual friends. How awkward would things be for them? You know they have to have mutual friends if they've been married for 20 years. I try to put myself into their shoes and I just can't even imagine. What do you say? And to whom do you say it?

What's the craziest story you've dealt with on Facebook or MySpace? What do you think you would do in a situation like this? From any of the angles! There's a lot of talk about social media and the pitfalls associated with it; what is your opinion?

  1. This might be wrong but for myself, reading that...my first thought was: beauty isn't everything...if you act in real life the way you just posted, I can see why he dumped you. I certainly wouldn't post names...my friends know who my husband is and since his family is on my facebook, I would never do that...even to get back at him. I'd probably more subtle and hit him where it hurts. Believe me, I have a vindictive bone in my body but I wouldn't air it out for the world to see. It only makes me look deperate and bad. :)

I've never had drama like that on my fb...worst I've had are single friends' on again, off again relationships. You know...my bf is on my fb...love you baby! I hate you, you dirtbag. That kind of thing. *sigh* I totally need to get more exciting friends...at least on fb! lol

  3. I definitely agree in theory. I'm not sure if a good run would quite get me through the hurt of something like this after 20 years of marriage, but maybe that would be a good time to start training for a marathon? ;)
