The Non-Resolution Post

Well, here we are. It's 2011. This will be our first full calendar year in the U.S. This will be the year that Zander starts Kindergarten. The year Sam starts high school. The year we will turn 36, 34, 14, 10, 5, and 3. I'm hoping that this is also the year that I will drop this weight.

I stumbled a little over the holidays. It started with that holiday box. Then our microwave went out and it took over three weeks to get it replaced. (I know it seems lame, but not having the microwave made breakfast really inconvenient. Once breakfast went, the rest of the day stuttered. Badly.) We made cookies and the kids had Christmas candy and...and...

Well, I just slipped a bit.

Not badly, though. I gained about three pounds and there is a pretty good chance that it's mostly water weight. Annoying, but not bad considering that it was the holidays. I'm done beating myself up over these little bumps in the road. This slump is not a failure; naming it as such implies that my weight loss journey is over, that I've quit. Neither of those things is true. If and when I lose the weight, this time of the year is still going to cause weight fluctuation. It's normal for most people, even those of healthy weight.

The boys are back to school today. We're heading back into our normal routine and that, along with a brand-new microwave, should help get me back on track. Of course, those two things alone are not going to get me there. I will have to make a couple deliberate changes in order to help things along. And, because I need some accountability, here they are:

I'm starting South Beach Phase One today. I actually like the first little phase of SB so this isn't going to bother me at all. I don't even have to worry about giving up soda this time. I'm just getting the refined carbs out of my system.

I will increase my water intake to 60 oz a day. I drink a lot of tea. This is fine, but I could use a little more plain water, I think.

I will walk two miles at least three days out of the week. Obviously the goal is to get higher than that but I have to start somewhere.

And there you have it. My plan to get back on track. I want to make it clear: this is NOT a resolution. It's just a continuation of what I was doing before the arrival of the holidays.

How's everyone doing? Getting back into the swing of things after the holidays?

  1. Good for you-- three pounds over the holidays is really not bad I think!

We are back in the swing of the routine-- and that may or may not be goofed up today with a phone call about a job for me... fingers crossed!

  2. That's what I'm doing, too. It just so happens I'm recommitting myself to tracking my food with the new year since I'm done traveling and 'celebrating'. 3 pounds is pretty good, especially if you had access to Christmas cookies. I made cookies but promptly put them in a care package, I've learned if they are allowed to sit out or hang in the freeze I eat them, so I tape those puppies up pronto. I ate like crap over Christmas, but I also exercised like a fiend, a fiend I tell you! I think I stayed the same. Actually I haven't a clue because I didn't weigh myself before, but my jeans are a bit looser.
