Pushing Beyond Comfort Zones

I have a thing for quotes--something I have written about before--and several of my refrigerator magnets have sayings on them. The one currently occupying the "in your face" position is this one:

Do one thing every day that scares you.

-Eleanor Roosevelt

I am not a brave or bold person by nature. In person I am rather passive; timid is a good word too. When I was younger I used to force myself to do things outside my comfort zone. There are reasons for that (which I'm not prepared to discuss here at this point), but that drive is what enabled me to do many of the things I did in my early 20s. I am trying to get a little of this mindset back. A hint of bold every once in awhile would probably be a good thing.

Sergeant Major Mom asked me several questions for my birthday ('cause she rocks!), and one of them was: Have you ever gone skydiving? Would you ever??

The short answer is no, which you probably could have guessed from above. I have never gone skydiving. Nor would I at this point. Another quote I like (and I don't know who first said it) is that I don't see the need to go jumping out of a perfectly good airplane! The closest that I ever came to anything like that was a bungee swing attraction at a local water park in Florida. Jason and I would normally never do something like that but my dad was there and he paid for it. We kind of had to. It was awesome and I am so glad that I did it--but I couldn't see myself doing it again! The swing part was great but that free fall at the beginning? Wow!

Are you fearless or timid? Maybe something in between? What is the most daring thing you have ever done?

  1. I totally agree about the skydiving thing! If the plane was going down, then maybe! :) I've never even done one of those bungee things. I'm a wimp. I do roller coasters sometimes though - and my husband doesn't.
I wish that I were a bit more daring...

  2. I have done that same thing at the Iowa State Fair! LOVED it. Then I did the one that they slingshot you into the air while you are sitting in a chair.

I think before I was a mother I would have jumped out of an airplane-- or gone bungee jumping....but nto anymore- at least until they are grown.

The other thing that I have always wanted to do, but would not anymore now that I have kids.... is travel over seas. Without them.

That is way to far to be away from them, should something happen.

Yep- I was much more daring when I was younger and without children....

  3. You should go hang gliding, not as scary as sky diving, but thrilling nonetheless. I took OccDoc hang gliding for some graduation. He's had so many I can't really remember why we went, probably for some army graduation thing - you know how that goes, people have a ceremony for tying their shoes.

I think the craziest thing I've ever done was let OccDoc take me up in a 2 seater plane. Like flying. In the air. He had his private pilot's license and one day convinced me to go up with him.

  4. I think I am kinda adrenaline junkie - anything from skydiving to scuba diving, and I am in. I have done lots of mountain climbing, including the highest peaks in Europe and The States but I don't know if that is the most daring stuff .... Recently the snowboarding has been pretty scary - until I started to figure it out.
And I agree with Annoyed Army Wife - go and try hang gliding, it is a blast!!

  5. I love that quote! I'd like to think that I'm fearless, and I used to be. But I'm not nearly as fearless since I had kids and realized a sense of mortality. I'd like to think I'm a bit adventurous, but definitely not fearless. But I would soooo go skydiving!

  6. I might do that once I reach my goal weight. It is something soooo out of my comfort zone. :)
